The Edward M Kennedy Center is hosting a13-day solo painting exhibition of Farhana Yasmin at its office in Dhanmondi.
The show titled ‘Evanescence’ features 31 paintings by the artist depicting emotions of women related to their position in the society, while many others feature classic female characters of Bangla literature.
‘I made these paintings through my efforts of capturing moments of life we tend to forget quickly despite the fact that we repeatedly face such situations,’ said Farhana Yasmin, a graduate of
Rajshahi University’s fine arts department.
Most of the paintings in the show depict women faces, drawn with oil and acrylic paints, those portray different expressions while a few other abstract paintings represent the artist’s endeavours of expressing her emotions derived from sounds and smell from her surroundings.
‘I enjoy depicting the energy around me,’ said the artist.
Even titles of many of her paintings are unique in the sense that those relate to some famous women characters of Bangla literature.
One such title is Haimanti, named after the protagonist of a famous short story by Rabindranath Tagore. The painting depicts the struggles of a woman in a society where her existence is barely recognised.
‘I have tried to capture the impressions of different incidents or characters for reminding the viewers that views towards the woman in the society has not changed,’ said Farhana.
Her painting Kajol Rekha, a folk tale character, presents how society treats a maiden.
The show was inaugurated on Sunday by Nashid Amin, a fine arts department teacher of Jagannath University. It will continue till October 27.
